History

SinjunGrammarians cricket club was established in 2005 and is an amalgamation of two cricket clubs. Both were formed shortly after the ground was effectively purchased by the Sir Walter St John’s Schools Trust in 1918. Old Sinjuns (established 1919) were the former pupils of Sir Walter St John’s School in Battersea High Street, whilst Old Grammarians (established 1926) were connected similarly to Battersea Grammar School. Both schools are now defunct.

When the Schools Trust closed in 1992, it was replaced by the Sir Walter St Johns Educational Charity. who then agreed a lease with the Trinity Fields Trust in 1996. This lease now expires in 2067. Trinity Fields Trust is responsible for the maintenance of the ground and its charitable objects that are aimed at providing sporting opportunities for young people in the London Boroughs of Wandsworth and Lambeth. SinjunGrammarians cricket club, through its cricket colts programme, supports these objectives, and the club continue to use the ground for senior cricket as a result.

The ground has an interesting past as it has been open to sport for almost 150 years. Apart from cricket, famous football and rugby sides have used it as a home ground before it was purchased. It has played host to many famous cricketers including Dr W.G. Grace who scored a century on the ground batting for the London County Cricket Club against the Heathfield club in 1902.

A book has been written by the SGCC President, Mr Graham Jackson called “A History of Trinity Fields”. This historical book gives a fascinating insight into the history of the fields and is available to purchase directly by contacting Graham at jackson38@btinternet.com
